I'm sure some of the 3-gunners will speak up here shortly, but you can always email Jeff with questions Gregg:

    Jeff.Gross@lineadefego.info

He is working on some basic "what you need to know" 3-gun material so I can get a page up on the website - we're just not quite there yet.

(As I recall you can expect rifle shots out to about 300 yards).

Okay, I just got a message from Jeff - he says:

"I would tell him to bring 200 rifle, 150 pistol, 125 #7 shot, 10 slugs and if he has 5 rounds of 00 buck or 10 rounds of #4 that should be enough.  That is just a generic number but if he is new to his weapon systems, maybe bring more or have a plan to only engage certain targets  with "x" amount of rounds and then move on. "

I would love to go but won’t have Sundays free for a couple months.  It is a fantastic match though and I highly recommend going if you can.  Rifle shots can be from 2-350 yards, bring some heavy bullet ammo (69-75gr for .223) for the long stuff if your barrel twist can handle it.  I just use the 55gr surplus stuff or reloads for the 100yd and in targets.  They have a swinger target that you need to hit it so it spins over itself, it can be challenging if you have a cylinder choke and no buckshot.  I don’t want to have to use buck so I just pop in a full choke and use my regular walmart federal/Remington 100rd pack birdshot loads.  It’s funny that a lot of 3gunners don’t think about changing chokes but I do it all the time, before almost every shotgun stage.

They might have a long range slug shot or 2 so it might be good to figure out what your zero is for the slug you want to use.  With my gun the 1600fps Winchester slugs hit 2-3’ left at 40yds but the fiocchi low recoil slugs are maybe 6” left at the same distance.  There won’t be much pistol since they shoot a pistol match on Saturday, maybe 40-50 rds but bring extra just in case.

And one more thing, #7.5 shot knocks down steel better than #8 (especially with that swinger).

Shit... that's a lot of ammo.  Will need a new shoulder when it's over.

That’s just what you should bring, not what you’ll actually shoot.  I usually shoot:

100 rds rifle (cuz I suck)
60 rds birdshot
2-4 slugs
40 rds pistol

Thanks for all of the info Corey and Brian.   I just might go watch this sunday.  I can't see out to 350 yards. How am I going to hit anything?

They do shoot a California/10 round friendly division so you'll be scored like against like.

I went to Pala 3 gun yesterday.  My class was 10 round limited.  I had a good time, but it was a long day lugging all the equipment.  Blasting away at steel with  a shotgun is the best.   400 yard plates with an SKS is a bit difficult.   Maybe that is why every guy had a scope on his AR.   Im learning.

Start watching Craigslist for a deal on a jogging stroller you can modify into a 3 gun cart. There were some tips in this thread:

Hi Gregg,

I hope the 3gun match went well, I’m certainly jealous.  I hope to get back out there for the Sept match (August match is cancelled).  Anyway, at the Pala match you can drive your car/truck to each of the bays and just keep your gear in the trunk/bed and stage the guns on the tables as necessary.  Some people use those carts (or modified baby jogger), definitely a must if you’re at most other ranges.  I have one I use for duck hunting, I need to put gun mounts on it, though.  It helps to get one with big wheels, on craigslist I bought a used Baby Jogger with 20” wheels.  Works great over rough terrain and fairly decent in mud.  I took the canvas off and just use the frame.
